A man died early Thursday, October 29, when a pickup truck rolled over on a freeway ramp just west of the Las Vegas Strip, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.
Troopers were called at about 2:35 a.m. to the southbound Interstate 15 off-ramp to eastbound Flamingo Road. Trooper Shawn Haggstrom of the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol, told News 3 Las Vegas that investigators believe a single pickup truck rolled over on the ramp. The driver, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The ramp and two freeway lanes were closed
The eastbound Flamingo off-ramp was fully closed during the investigation, and the two right lanes of southbound I-15 near Flamingo, lanes No. 4 and No. 5, were also shut down. The closures slowed the morning drive near the Strip, one of the busiest freeway interchanges in the valley for resort traffic and for local drivers crossing between the east and west sides of Las Vegas.
FOX5 Las Vegas and KLAS 8 News Now both reported the death on Thursday morning, citing Nevada State Police. Officials had not announced a reopening time in the reports published Thursday morning, and drivers heading for the Strip from southbound I-15 were left to work around the closed ramp while troopers documented the scene.
What officials have not said yet
State police have not released the man's name. In Nevada fatal crashes, the county coroner normally releases a driver's identity after family members have been notified. Troopers have also not said what caused the pickup to roll over, whether speed or impairment played any role, or whether any other vehicle was involved before the truck left its lane.
Those answers are expected to follow the highway patrol's preliminary investigation. Investigators in a fatal rollover work through the vehicle's final path, the condition of the ramp and any video from the freeway corridor before they publish a preliminary account, and the patrol said more information would follow that work.
A second serious valley crash on Wednesday evening
The rollover was the second serious crash on Las Vegas valley roads in less than a day. On Wednesday evening, October 28, at about 6:09 p.m., a motorcyclist was critically injured in a crash with a vehicle at Fort Apache Road and Reno Avenue, near Tropicana Avenue in the west valley, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said. The rider was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, and the area around the crash was closed while officers investigated.
Police have not connected the two crashes. The highway patrol is investigating the I-15 ramp death, and Metro police are handling the Fort Apache case.
