Hull City drew 1-1 with Brentford at the MKM Stadium on Sunday in Premier League Matchday 8. Oli McBurnie put Hull ahead from the penalty spot in the 24th minute, and Dango Ouattara equalised for Brentford in the 63rd minute in front of a crowd of 24,259.
The opening minutes were shaped by the weather as much as the football. Strong winds from Storm Boelo carried balloons and litter from the pre-match display onto the pitch, and both teams had to pick their way through the debris before the game settled into a rhythm.
McBurnie ends his wait from the spot
Brentford had the first real chance after 11 minutes. Ouattara pounced on a loose pass, knocked the ball past Alfie Herrington and laid it back to Aaron Hickey on the edge of the area, and Konstantinos Tzolakis saved Hickey's low shot comfortably. Hull answered when Mohamed Belloumi found McBurnie inside the box, but Mathias Jensen got across to block the shot as the striker prepared to strike.
The penalty came from a Brentford error. Caoimhin Kelleher played a short pass toward Hickey inside the six yard box, Tim Iroegbunam applied pressure and won the ball, and Hickey brought him down as he tried to recover. McBurnie placed the penalty into the bottom right corner. Kelleher guessed the right way but could not reach it. The goal was McBurnie's first in the Premier League for over 900 days, and it sent Hull in ahead at the break.
Ouattara brings Brentford level
Brentford pressed harder after half time. Kevin Schade delivered a cross that Tzolakis could only parry, and Ouattara could not turn the loose ball in. Jensen then collected the ball outside the area and saw his shot deflected wide.
Keith Andrews sent on Mikkel Damsgaard and Jaidon Anthony just after the hour, and the changes paid off at once. Damsgaard combined with Anthony and crossed into a dangerous area, Lewie Coyle could not clear, and Igor Thiago prodded the ball toward Ouattara, who converted from close range to make it 1-1.
Brentford pushed for a winner. Anthony shot narrowly wide after a flick-on from Thiago, then had a header kept out by Tzolakis, and Ouattara also tested the Hull goalkeeper with a header. Hull replied on the counter. Mohamed-Ali Cho was played in behind the Brentford defence, cut inside and shot, and Kelleher saved with his feet. Belloumi also raced forward on a counter and fired over the bar.
Hull had the final chance in the 88th minute. Cho crossed from the left for substitute Joe Gelhardt, but Mamadou Sangare put the forward under pressure and the shot went off target. The draw keeps Hull unbeaten at home this season, but they have now gone seven games without a win. Brentford made three changes for the match, with Sangare and Hickey starting in place of the suspended Vitaly Janelt and Yehor Yarmoliuk and Schade returning to the side, and they take a point home from a match they trailed for almost 40 minutes.
