Hamburger SV beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on Friday night, November 6, 2026, in the opening match of Bundesliga Matchday 9. Miro Muheim put Hamburg ahead early, Joe Scally equalised for Gladbach shortly before half time, and the match turned three minutes after the break when Kō Itakura was sent off. Shafiq Nandja and Albert Grønbæk scored in the second half to settle the result.

Gladbach started brightly and Shuto Machino fired over inside four minutes. Hamburg struck on 11 minutes from a loose ball. Albert Sambi Lokonga slid the ball to Muheim, and the full back drove a 30 metre shot into the bottom corner. The Bundesliga match report measured the shot at 129.43 kilometres per hour and listed it as the fastest goal scored in the league this season.

The visitors stayed in the match through their goalkeeper. Daniel Batz made several saves in the first half, among them stops from David Møller Wolfe. Gladbach levelled on 44 minutes. A cross from Lukas Ullrich was only half cleared, and Scally scored with a deflected shot that spun in shortly before the break.

Red card changes the match

Itakura had come into the Gladbach back three for his first start in seven weeks, in place of the injured Daiki Hashioka. On 49 minutes he brought down Møller Wolfe near the halfway line and received a second yellow card, leaving Gladbach with ten men for the rest of the night.

Hamburg used the extra man on the hour. Grønbæk threaded a pass into the penalty area and Nandja drilled the ball past Batz to make it 2-1. The goal was the first of Nandja's Bundesliga career. Ten minutes later Grønbæk scored himself, hitting a long range shot into the top corner after Gladbach failed to clear a loose ball. Patson Daka and others pressed for a fourth goal, but the score held at 3-1.

What the result means

The Bundesliga named Grønbæk its Man of the Match. He finished with a goal, an assist and the highest Fantasy Manager score of any player on the field. The official match facts put expected goals at 1.90 for Hamburg and 1.86 for Gladbach, a measure of how close the match stayed until the red card.

The win lifted Hamburg to eighth place with 12 points from nine matches. Gladbach stayed bottom of the table in 18th place with four points from nine matches and one win. The club began the season with six straight defeats and is still looking for a way out of the relegation places. Hamburg's next league match is the Nordderby away to Werder Bremen on November 22, after the international break.
