Key points

  • Concacaf announced a new format for the Gold Cup on Thursday, November 5, 2026, and the change is the biggest the tournament has made to its group stage.
  • The tournament runs from June 17 to July 11, 2027.
  • The 16 teams will be placed into eight pots of two, based on the Concacaf men's national team rankings.

Concacaf announced a new format for the Gold Cup on Thursday, November 5, 2026, and the change is the biggest the tournament has made to its group stage. The 2027 edition will drop the old setup of four groups of four teams. In its place, the 16 teams will be split into two groups of eight, and each team will play four group matches instead of three.

The tournament runs from June 17 to July 11, 2027. The group stage takes place from June 17 to 30, the quarterfinals follow on July 3 and 4, the semifinals on July 7 and 8, and the final on Sunday, July 11, 2027. The official draw is scheduled for Thursday, April 8, 2027. Concacaf has not announced the host venues yet and said the match schedule and ticketing details will come later.

How the two groups work

The 16 teams will be placed into eight pots of two, based on the Concacaf men's national team rankings. One team from each pot goes into each group. Inside a group, the eight teams are then arranged into four ranking bands, and each team plays one opponent from each band. A set fixture list, fixed in advance, decides the exact matchups, so every team faces a mix of stronger and weaker opponents.

All eight teams in a group sit in one table. The top four in each group advance to the knockout rounds. The eight teams that advance play single knockout matches over three rounds: quarterfinals, semifinals and the final. Group position decides the quarterfinal pairings, with higher placed teams facing lower placed opponents.

Who gets in

Fifteen of the 16 places go to Concacaf members through the 2026/27 Nations League and the Gold Cup preliminary round. Eight teams qualify directly through the Nations League in November 2026. The remaining seven places are decided in the preliminary round in March 2027. The last place goes to guest nation Saudi Arabia, which USA TODAY reported is currently the only team already qualified for 2027.

Mexico holds the title. Mexico beat the United States 1-0 in the 2025 final, USA TODAY reported, and the new format raises the chance that the region's two biggest teams meet before the final, because both can land in the same eight team group.

Why Concacaf changed it

Concacaf said the format was designed to produce more meaningful matches and more meetings between top ranked teams earlier in the tournament. President Victor Montagliani, who is also a FIFA vice president, said fans want those meetings sooner. "Our fans want to see the best teams in our region compete against each other," Montagliani said in the announcement. He said every match will matter, with teams facing a balanced mix of opponents while they compete for a place in the knockout rounds.

The Gold Cup is the main men's national team championship for North America, Central America and the Caribbean, and it has been played every two years. The 2027 edition is the first under the new structure, and it starts with the opening match on Thursday, June 17, 2027.
