Canary Islands Rescue 3,261 Migrants in Six Days as El Hierro Calls Surge Unsustainable
Spain's maritime rescue services rescued 3,261 people in the first six days of November on the Canary Islands route. Regional president Fernando Clavijo said the pace was approaching record levels from 2024 and called the situation on El Hierro absolutely unsustainable.

Spain's maritime rescue services rescued 3,261 migrants in the first six days of November on the Canary Islands route, and regional authorities warned on Friday that the numbers now arriving were unsustainable. Canary Islands regional president Fernando Clavijo said the surge was approaching the record breaking levels seen in 2024, and that on some days the current pace was even higher.
The pressure on El Hierro
Clavijo said that in El Hierro, home to about 11,400 residents, the situation was "absolutely unsustainable". Hundreds of migrants were seen at the port of La Restinga after rescue services brought about 500 people ashore from two boats on Thursday night off El Hierro and recovered one body.
EFE reported that since Thursday evening the Maritime Rescue Service had brought more than 1,021 people ashore on El Hierro, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, one of whom had died, and that two further rescue operations off El Hierro were still under way on Friday morning.
Reporting cited by Teneriffa News put the wider November total at more than 3,200 people arriving on 39 boats in the first five days of the month. El Hierro alone received 2,300 people in that period, among them 307 minors and 11 infants. October had already seen 6,164 people rescued on the route, so the November surge followed a busy month rather than a quiet one.
Deaths and strain on services
At least nine migrants have died off Spain's Canary Islands in recent weeks, and a critically ill baby was airlifted to hospital on arrival, while thousands of other people have been rescued. The deaths and the medical emergency sit alongside the rescue totals and underline the risk on the crossing.
Clavijo said calm sea conditions were fuelling the new surge in departures. He said arrivals were straining healthcare and transport services, with buses diverted to migration operations and medical staff brought in from other islands to La Restinga. For an island of about 11,400 residents, receiving 2,300 people in five days means the new arrivals equal about a fifth of the local population, a scale that explains why buses and medical teams had to be moved from their normal work.
A sharp turn after a quieter year
The surge comes after a much quieter year on the route. Migrant arrivals to the Canary Islands were down nearly 61 percent in the first 10 months of 2026 compared with the same period of 2024, despite the November surge. Services sized for a quieter year now face days that match the busiest period on record.
The Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is one of the world's deadliest migration crossings, and attempted crossings typically pick up in autumn when sea conditions are calmer. The pattern described by Clavijo fits that season, with calm seas allowing more boats to leave and rescue services then handling several arrivals in a single night, as happened off El Hierro on Thursday.
With two more rescue operations still under way on Friday morning and October already at 6,164 rescues, authorities face the same pressure again if calm conditions hold. For now the count stands at 3,261 people rescued in six days, at least nine dead in recent weeks, and a regional president saying plainly that his smallest island cannot sustain this pace.
