The Boston Bruins beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in a shootout on Monday night at TD Garden. David Pastrnak scored the only goal of the shootout, in the third round, after Boston had led 2-0 and Vegas had come back to tie the game in the third period.

James Hagens opened the scoring in the first period with his sixth goal of the season, set up by Elias Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov. The goal kept Hagens at the top of the NHL rookie scoring list. Morgan Geekie made it 2-0 on the power play at 3:23 of the second period, with Pavel Zacha and Pastrnak assisting.

Vegas cut the lead in the second period through Mark Stone. Trevor Connelly tied the game 2-2 at 7:23 of the third period, banking the puck in off Jeremy Swayman, with Noah Hanifin and Mitch Marner assisting. Neither team scored again in regulation, and overtime solved nothing.

The shootout decides it

Casey Mittelstadt and Fraser Minten missed Boston's first two shootout attempts, and Swayman stopped all three Vegas shooters, including Jack Eichel and Marner. Pastrnak then beat Carter Hart for the winner. The assist on the Geekie goal also gave Pastrnak 300 career power play points, the third Czech player to reach that mark, according to Sportsnet Stats.

Swayman finished with 21 saves on 23 shots. Hart stopped 25 of 27 for Vegas. Boston outshot the Golden Knights 27-23.

Why it matters

Boston improved to 11-4-1 and stayed on top of the Atlantic Division with a sixth straight home win. It was the second straight game the Bruins needed extra time, after Saturday's 5-4 overtime win over Chicago. Vegas fell to 9-5-2 but took a point after trailing by two goals with a long major penalty still to kill in the second period.

What happens next

Boston practices in Brighton on Tuesday and Wednesday, then plays at Pittsburgh on Thursday, November 5. Vegas continues its four game road trip at Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

The homestand sweep

Boston swept its two game homestand and went to a shootout for the first time this season, Boston Hockey Now reported. The Bruins came in at 10-4-1 with 21 points and first place in the Atlantic Division. Vegas earned its point the hard way, coming back from two goals down on the road. The Golden Knights continue a four game road trip, and both teams now head to Pittsburgh, Vegas on Tuesday and Boston on Thursday, to face a Penguins team that sits at 5-7-2.
