How the fire grew
Officials told ABC7 New York that the fire appeared to have started on the second floor before spreading through the building. News 12 Brooklyn reported that the fire rose to two alarms at 1:46 a.m. as it extended to the building next door, and to three alarms at 2:10 a.m. About 231 fire and EMS personnel responded, News 12 reported. The main body of the fire was knocked down just before 2:40 a.m.
Photos from the scene on Thursday morning showed the exterior of the home charred as FDNY officials worked around the building, the Post reported.
Batteries found, cause still open
Hazmat crews were called after lithium-ion batteries were found at the scene, ABC7 and News 12 reported. Investigators are working to determine whether the batteries played any role in the fire. No cause has been released, and fire marshals are investigating.
The Department of Buildings and the American Red Cross were also at the scene, News 12 reported, and the Red Cross is helping residents displaced by the fire with temporary housing.
The FDNY had not released the identities or ages of the six people who died by Thursday morning. The investigation remains open, and officials have not said how many people lived in the home.
What happens next
Fire marshals will work to find how the fire started, and investigators will test whether the lithium-ion batteries found inside played any part in it. The Department of Buildings was at the scene on Thursday morning and will check what is left of the house and of the building next door, which the fire reached as the call rose to two alarms. The help the Red Cross is giving covers temporary housing for residents who cannot go back into their homes.
Officials have given no timeline for naming the six people who died, have not released their ages, and have not said how many people lived in the home. The FDNY also has not said whether anyone was rescued from inside the building. This article will be updated in place if the department releases a cause, names the victims, or changes the count of the dead or injured.
