The search for the teenager accused of stabbing a man to death inside South Station has ended in Texas. Marico Levy, 18, of Aubrey, Texas, turned himself in to authorities in Texas on Friday night, October 30, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office. MBTA Transit Police announced the arrest on Saturday. "Marico Levy is in custody for the murder of Mr. Owens. Levy is in the custody of Texas authorities," the department posted.

What happened on August 12

Police say Latavius Owens, 29, of Memphis, Tennessee, was stabbed during a fight on an escalator leading out of South Station at 5:33 p.m. on August 12, in the middle of the evening rush. Transit officers found Owens with a stab wound, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital. South Station is one of the busiest transport hubs in New England, and the killing happened as commuters were heading home.

Boston Police Superintendent Paul McLaughlin told WBZ-TV at the time that he did not think the attack was random. Investigators have not publicly described what started the fight.

The hunt

Six days after the stabbing, on August 18, Boston police released Levy's photo and asked the public for help finding him, saying he was wanted for murder. Levy was 17 years old at the time of the stabbing. Police named him publicly while he was still a minor, an unusual step that reflected how hard he was to find.

The trail went quiet for more than two months. It ended on Friday night in Texas, where Levy is from. Aubrey is a town north of Dallas. Reports citing the district attorney's office say Levy walked in and surrendered rather than being caught in a raid or a traffic stop.

What happens next

No date has been set for Levy's arraignment, and the district attorney's office has not said exactly what charges he will face. It is also not yet clear when he will be brought back to Massachusetts to face the case in Boston. Those steps, including any fight over his return, will decide how fast the case moves.

For the family of Latavius Owens, the arrest closes the first chapter of the case, the search. What remains is the court process, which starts with Levy's return to Massachusetts and a first appearance in a Boston courtroom.
