Bitcoin and Ether ETFs Shed $549 Million as Ether Outflows Near $1 Billion in October

Key points

  • Investors pulled $549 million out of US spot Bitcoin and Ether funds last week, extending a run of withdrawals that has turned October into the worst month of the year for Ether funds.
  • Cointelegraph reported the figures on Monday, October 19, citing data from SoSoValue.
  • The pace is slowing, at least.

Investors pulled $549 million out of US spot Bitcoin and Ether funds last week, extending a run of withdrawals that has turned October into the worst month of the year for Ether funds.

Cointelegraph reported the figures on Monday, October 19, citing data from SoSoValue. Bitcoin exchange traded funds recorded about $229 million in net outflows for the week, while Ether funds lost about $320 million. It was a second straight week of outflows for the Bitcoin funds and a third straight week for the Ether funds.

The pace is slowing, at least. The week before, the two fund groups together lost $1.22 billion. But the October total for Ether is now hard to ignore: spot Ether ETFs have recorded about $955 million in net outflows so far this month, more than in any other month this year.

The smaller funds bled too. Solana ETFs lost about $26 million in the week, Zcash funds $19 million, Hyperliquid funds $18 million, XRP funds $1.8 million and BNB funds $285,000, according to the same SoSoValue data.

Prices moved with the flows. Ether fell about 5 percent over seven days to around $2,433, while Bitcoin dipped 1.3 percent to $82,783 at the time of Cointelegraph's report, using CoinGecko prices. On Monday, Bitcoin traded back near $82,500 in market updates as crypto steadied after the stock market's AI selloff.

Friday showed the pattern in one day. FinanceFeeds reported that crypto ETFs lost $164.8 million on October 16 alone: Bitcoin funds $82.4 million, Ether funds $69.7 million and Solana funds $12.7 million, with BlackRock's funds leading the Bitcoin withdrawals.

Not a collapse, a leak

There is a difference between investors abandoning crypto funds and investors trimming them, and the year to date numbers support the second reading. Bitcoin ETFs are still about $259 million in net inflows for 2026, and Ether ETFs about $610 million, according to the SoSoValue figures cited by Cointelegraph.

What the weekly data do say is that the easy money stopped arriving. Funds took in billions when prices rose; with Bitcoin about a third below its October 2025 record near $126,000 and US inflation data keeping rate cut hopes in check, the buyers who chased the rally are now the sellers meeting it.

The next test is this week's flow data. A third week of shrinking outflows would suggest the leak is closing. A fourth straight week of Ether withdrawals, after a record October, would say something harder about how institutions now size their crypto positions.
