Vandals dumped red paint outside Sen. Susan Collins' office in Biddeford, Maine, and wrote "Blood on her hands" on the sidewalk on the night before Election Day, her campaign said. Staff found the paint on Tuesday morning. Some of it had splattered onto the front doors.
Police said the vandalism happened at about 11 p.m. on Monday, WGME-TV reported. The campaign said no one got into the building. Biddeford police are investigating.
"This is another incident in a series and the second attempt at our Biddeford office to intimidate the Senator and her staff. These tactics are disturbing, but not effective. Our staff is undeterred and on the job," Katie Brown, the chief of staff at the Biddeford office, told Fox News.
Collins, a Republican, raised the vandalism herself at a campaign stop at a coffee shop in Presque Isle, in her native Aroostook County, the Wall Street Journal reported. She said she had called the head of the Biddeford office to check that the staffer was all right.
The second attack since September
The same Main Street office was hit in September, when a vulgar message about President Trump was spray-painted in red on the office doors. Collins also told a radio host that her home in Bangor had been targeted with eggs in September, the Journal reported.
Her Democratic challenger, former state Senate president Troy Jackson, condemned the September vandalism at the time. "Senator Collins and her staff should be able to do their jobs without anyone defacing their office, and I condemn whoever did this," Jackson said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
The Biddeford office stands a few blocks from where a man was fatally shot by an ICE agent in July. Days after that shooting, protesters pushed through the office's front door chanting "vote her out," Fox News reported.
A sixth term on the line
Collins has served in the Senate since 1997 and is seeking a sixth term. She is the only Republican senator in New England. Maine voters are deciding her race against Jackson on Tuesday, in a contest both parties have watched closely because control of the Senate is at stake in the midterms.
No arrest had been announced by Tuesday afternoon, and police had not named a suspect. The campaign did not say whether the office would change its hours on Election Day.
