A juvenile girl was shot and killed inside a home in Arcadia on Thursday, October 22. The man suspected of firing the gun fled before officers arrived and was later found in Pasadena, the next city west, with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police and local television reports.
What happened on Huntington Drive
Arcadia police officers went to the 800 block of West Huntington Drive at about 11 a.m. on Thursday after a caller reported a disturbance and said a man inside the residence had fired a gun, the Arcadia Police Department said in a release issued on Thursday afternoon. When officers arrived, the man had fled the scene. Inside the home, officers found a juvenile female suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The girl's name is being withheld, police said. The block sits near Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, a city in the San Gabriel Valley northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Authorities later said a 20-year-old man who had been dating the girl made a forced entry into the home, according to a MyNewsLA account of the case. Police have not released the man's name, and no motive has been released.
A second scene in Pasadena
Shortly after 1 p.m., Pasadena responders were called to Glenarm Street and the Arroyo Parkway, also known as State Route 110. Pasadena chief communications officer Lisa Derderian confirmed that one person there had been seriously injured by a gunshot, and officials said the incident had originated in Arcadia. Reports from the scene described the wound as self-inflicted.
Local television stations then tied the two scenes together. NBC4 reported a girl shot and killed in Arcadia and the suspected shooter dead in Pasadena, and said neighbors heard arguing inside an apartment complex and then gunfire. ABC7 reported two people dead, including a teenage girl, as police investigated the two scenes on Thursday afternoon. An earlier wire account had described the suspect as critically injured, and the Los Angeles Times reported that the suspected shooter attempted suicide in Pasadena, citing police.
The investigation
The case is being handled by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Division, Arcadia police said. What led up to the shooting inside the home has not been released, and no further arrests have been announced.
